Helping humankind live with the earth not against it

Reusing my tea light tins

A while back I wrote a post about reusing the leftover wax from the tea lights I use in my daily practice. I pondered what to do with the tins from the tea lights since it seemed like a total waste to just throw them out. Scarlet (of Lakefront Pagan Voice) came to the rescue! She pointed me to her video:

Now I have new candles sitting on my alter cooling and I am so excited to use them! I took some photos of my progress today, and thought I would share them. I tried to reuse as many of the clips as possible but… I might just go buy more. It was super frustrating to unbend them. The ones I bought had long wicks and I trimmed them and then used the extra wick with the old clips.

after unbending the clip putting a new wick in

re-crimping the clip

I ended up making less than I had because… clips = annoying

Not pretty but I am happy! I got to reuse the tins and I didn’t have to go buy more tea lights!

My Dream One Stop Pagan Shop

Due to my lack of consistent access to witchy/metaphysical shops I have been day dreaming about my ideal shop. I went into several in New Orleans and they struck me as places that sell a lot of finished products, but that’s never what I am looking for. I would want to pick up the supplies to do the spells and make the things myself.

My shop would assume you do your own spells and would sell you any last minute supplies you might need. For example, I grow a lot of my own herbs. My shop would have some gardening supplies, enough to just get you started with a planter garden, as well as dried herbs in case you need something right now. I love cute plant labels for the garden I would totally love to have those for sale too. My shop would also have local almanacs, and plant ID books, and foraging guides.  I don’t think it would have starts, but seeds for sure of the classic plants that get used in witch craft. Garden gloves, and shovels and small bits and pieces. Not a nursery but just enough to get you started, and a few things the veteran gardener might need or want.

My shop would not only have some stones and crystals for sale, but local rock hounding guides and supplies. Mineral ID kits, and roadside geology books, rock hammers, and sample bags. Maybe even have a space for local rock hounds to sell their finds in the store with stories about where they are from. That’s the sort of samples I would buy for sure!

My ideal shop would have a kitchen section that would have kitchen tools used in magic. Mortal and Pestles of all shapes and sizes would be a must, along with nice wooden spoons and cauldrons for outdoor cooking and cute copper kettles and empty jars for storing herbs and good solid knives and cutting boards. Basically cute but durable kitchenware, since you spend a lot of time in there. Also some cook books, focused on local and seasonal cooking.

Supplies to make and burn incense of a variety of types would be awesome. I got a little carried away when it came to tools and started to also think about classes. I would love to take a class in making my own knife, so there would have to be supplies for that, and maybe a collection of locally made knives.
Brooms would be a combination of decorative and particle but all very well made and classes in how to make them. Lots of carrier oils, and a variety of little bottles and labels for them, candle making supplies along with candles. Also a section for curios for root workers.

If you can’t already tell books would be from all over the Dewey Decimal System, and a place to sit and look through them. Also since keeping a grimoire or book of shadows requires something to write in, blank books and book making supplies!

Maybe there would even be a “witch of the month” to sell pre-made things, but overall an emphasis on supplies. It would be a local mom and pop hardware/craft/garden/book store.  That is the kind of place I would spend a ton of money. Employees would have to be trained to be humble and helpful and never pretentious. It would be the sort of place that if you were new to the area you could find out everything you needed to know to really enjoy and make the most of where you live. Plant and animal guides and maybe even hiking guides! My ideal shop that I wish existed everywhere I move to.

Maybe one day I will retire from research and make this store a reality. But that would be a long way off so I will keep day dreaming about my ideal store. With classroom space or meeting space in back and not a far drive (maybe even biking distance) from my house with chickens and dogs and maybe even a llama and goose.

Avocado pie

Is it really the 29th already!?

I had way too much fun with friends last night to be of any use today. I wanted to share the pie I made though. We have an avocado tree in the yard and when it goes… it goes. With avocados everywhere I decided to try my hand at an avocado pie. I have made avocado tart pie things before and they were really good.

I used this recipe sort of: HERE with a few changes.

1/2 cup raw coconut oil
1/2 cup hot coco powder (we used Ghirardelli)
1 cup coconut milk
2/3 cups honey
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 avocado (2 ripe avocados for mainland varieties)
1 pre-baked 9-inch pie shell (we made a vegan crust but forgot to pre-cook it)

1. In a saucepan, melt the coconut oil and stir in the hot chocolate over low heat, stirring until smooth. Stir in the coconut milk, honey and salt, and heat until warm. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.

2. cut and mash the avocado and then pure into a blender with the chocolate mix. Pulse blend until smooth.

3. poor into crust and refrigerate for it to set. (we forgot to pre-cook the pie crust so we threw it in the oven and it was still awesome just warm and runny….)

It was amazingly delicious! I am defiantly going to try it again and this time do it right!

My adventure with tasseography

Yup. I have no idea. Did I do something interesting today? Nope. Just work, which is interesting to me but… not something I am going to write about here.

I did some brain storming and I decided to make some tea (because its a little chilly tonight). I guess I should start with what I am drinking tonight. I am drinking TWG tea chamomile. And I think I am going to tell you my tea reading.

In New Orleans I went to Bottom of the Cup Tea Room. This was my first ever reading for me by a stranger. We went back into the individual room and had a pleasant conversation getting everything set up. The steps listed on their website are

The method of use:

Place loose tea in cup.
Pour in ½ inch hot water
Turn cup upside down on napkin
Client turns cup all the way over once
Client places left hand on cup (tune into the individual’s vibrations)
Remove napkin
Turn cup three times counterclockwise
Read patterns formed by grounds in cup, beginning at the handle and moving left to right.

I had Lettie and we got along famously! I’m not sure about the turning but I placed my hands on the cup for a while while we just talked. I didn’t bring my camera in, or cell phone for that matter so I had nothing to take a picture of the reading but we talked about the shapes. She also gave me a prediction and did a three card spread. I would have read them a little different but with the same general meaning.

I think what made me feel like I wanted this to be my first reading experience was how comfortable the shop felt. I put a lot of weight on how comfortable I feel in a shop, and more than a few times that has kept me from buying things in other shops of all types.

I also got a CD for my reading which I am listening to now with my husband, which is totally fun. He is 100% atheist so I can’t wait to hear what he thinks! He smiled while listening to it and then said “well it was pretty vague…”

I see the bunny in the moon….
see!? Its the bunny!
I found some charts and lists of symbols online and thought I would share these. There are lots of resources online and I haven’t tried reading my own yet but when I do I’ll let you know what works for me!

Reef Love

I am a little sleepy for writing anything long. I just got back from a night snorkel on my favorite little reef. I love how different the reef feels at night. During the day you can see all around you and how shallow the area is. At night everything feels so vast! You can only really see as far as the light from your light travels.

The creatures on the night reef are different from the day reef. I will just leave you with my favorite image. There are brittle stars on our reef, and at night their arms snake out from every crack. But when you shine your light on them they start to retract back into the dark corners.

Brittle stars or ophiuroids. Closely related to sea stars

Seahenge

I went on a strange journey the other day. It started with wondering over to The Confessions of a Hedge Witch Blog, and specifically her post my night in the mound. There was a video linked which I will also link here. I found it fascinating. I love standing stones, this is no secret. I want to live somewhere that I can put up my own. What struck me about this video was the location mentioned called Seahenge.

I know I love Stonehenge, but what I loved about this Documentary was being introduced to so many other interesting sites. I have a very good friend who is an Archaeologist trained in England and you can bet this video is sitting in his inbox with a note that says “How much is arm waving bull shit?” because lets face it, its made for the general public and for some reason TV producers don’t think the truth is interesting enough….
The site like I said that most caught my eye was Seahenge. Seahenge is located in Norfolk England, in the town of Holme-next-the-Sea. This is a early Bronze Age timber circle. The site consists of a ring of logs with a large inverted oak stump.
Location Map, because.
Seahenge (I think this is a reconstruction)

The work to preserve the wood (that would have quickly started to degrade since being exposed) was protested (of course), but it is not preserved. There is an excellent write up on the Open University page Here
Anyways I will let you know what the archaeology friend says!

Learning Tonk

If you are not familiar with the Black Company Books by Glen Cook, you should be. They are excellent!

I’m not going to talk about the books (although I really love them), I am going to talk about a card game. Tonk. What do these have in common? The Black Company (main characters of the series) always mention playing Tonk (for money, and Goblin always cheats). My husband introduced the Black Company to me and we talked a few times about learning Tonk, because it sounded so fun.

We looked it up a few times and couldn’t get our heads around it even though it seemed simple. Last night we decided to put some effort into it and just learn the damn thing. We found the most awesome video. (Don’t worry its the one below). We took out the cards Cory and Lain from NWW gave me to go with Cory’s awesome book at the Meetup, and started to play. Yup, its totally fun. We are always looking for a good 2 person game and so far two nights in a row have totally enjoyed it. We played a few hands last night and a few hands when I got home from work. If you are thinking “come on, cribbage is a good one”, it is… and it is a game my dad taught me. Apparently I am too damn good at it, and both my husband refuses to play with me. So Tonk it is!

Borealis Meditation Super Give Away!

A Super Give Away!? Doesn’t that sound fun!? I am a giver, and I love to give presents. I really can’t resist. So after getting home I decided what I really wanted to do was give awesome things away. I am going to have to have a few rules, but nothing too harsh.
I am aiming for 1 a month until my pile runs out! I will post the details for each ones and the dates and any restrictions. The following are the general rules.
Rule #1: There will always be a question or statement that needs to be answered to be qualified for the giveaway. They won’t be too hard, just wanted something other than “Oh Me!!!” to make it a little fun.
Rule #2: I will always post the qualifying dates. Answers must be submitted in the form a blog comment on the correct post between the two dates.
Rule #3: You have to check back to see if you won, and you must either have a way for me to email you, or send me an email within the allotted (claim) time (announced for each one) to claim your prize. You must also send me your mailing address within that time. If the winner doesn’t respond a runner up will be chosen.
Rule #4: Shipping can suck when you live in the middle of the Pacific, because of the weight of some items I won’t be able to ship them internationally, if you are willing to pay the difference you are free to enter!
Rule #5: No bitching. This supposed to be fun. If you REALLY want something I can tell you where I got it and you can support the artist/craftsman yourself. I think my rules are designed in a way so we can keep doing this for a while so it’s fun for everyone! That is the point. HAVE FUN!
Rule #6: As long as you submit an answer you are qualified so feel free to share the giveaways with as many (or few) people as want!
Rule #7: Reviews are helpful (NPR told me), doesn’t matter what they say, just having them is shown to help sales. So if there is a link to the sponsor please review the item. I’m not TELLING you to review it, just asking nicely since most of these items were given to me via the supermoot sponsors.
